The system of lighting or lighting of the vehicle is one of the most important elements of safety in cars. Our road safety will depend largely on its good condition.
However, there are still many drivers who neglect the maintenance of the car’s lighting system. Not in vain, the area in which more serious defects were detected in the ITV in 2016 was the lighting and signaling, with 24.1% of the total, that is, one in four serious failures.
And at a speed of 90 km / h, a car travels about 25 meters every second. Thus, if the lighting system does not illuminate properly and causes the driver to find an obstacle with only half a second of delay, he will have lost more than 10 meters, a considerable distance if he is forced to break.
Hence it is important for our road safety , to check that all the lights that make up the lighting system of our vehicle (position, short or crossing, long or road, anti-fog …), as well as the lights of the signaling system (indicators, brakes, reversing light, license plate …) work correctly.
Tips to take care of the lighting system
In this way, check that all lighting systems work correctly. See if they are placed at just the right height to illuminate without glare. Make sure the atmospheric conditions of the moment are in the hands of the drivers.
In this sense, the first advice of all is to check the operation of the lights periodically. A poor state of the lighting system generates poor visibility of the road in the dark, increases the visual fatigue of the driver and the difficulty of other drivers to see your vehicle and its maneuvers.
On the other hand, to ensure the best lighting on the road, it is advisable to change the lamps every 50,000 kilometers or every two years, always in pairs, even if all the lights work correctly. Keep in mind that before you get to melt, a lamp can lose up to 30% of its brightness.
Install quality lamps, because, if we opt for low-cost brands, in many cases this is accompanied by a shorter life and less light power. And never install xenon lamps in halogen lamps, because the headlight must be prepared for it. Therefore, trust the replacement of the lamps to a trustworthy workshop where they will advise you what type of lamp is most suitable for your car.
The headlights, important piece
Also, pay attention to the excellent condition of the headlights, because any damage or breakage can produce condensation inside the headlight and there is a risk that a light bulb will be burned.
Similarly, do not forget to clean it. If the headlights or pilots are dirty, the distance of lighting and the distance from which it is seen is reduced. A simple layer of dust on the surface of the headlights can reduce its efficiency by up to 10% and the solution is as simple as passing a damp cloth from time to time.
Also, polishing headlights every so often is more than recommended. And it is that the headlights of the current cars become opaque with the passage of time, diminishing their ability to illuminate and consequently increasing the insecurity of its occupants in adverse weather conditions.
This is because for several years the headlights have been manufactured with polycarbonate, an element that deteriorates with the heat radiated by the lamps and the sun. Thus, with the passage of time, the headlights seem burned, giving a dirty and old look to the vehicles and to recover them the best option is to polish them (ask for this operation in any Autofit workshop).
Regulates the height of the headlights
Another important aspect is the correct regulation of the lights. A very high light can dazzle other drivers and, in any case, it is dangerous because it will make you lose visibility. The same happens if they are excessively low.
A bad adjustment can be due to blows, to the bad condition of the shock absorbers or to the fact that it travels with its heavily loaded vehicle. Today, most cars have regulators to correct the height of the headlights.
Other details to keep in mind
We already tell you in another entry of this blog the types of lights that exist in the market (halogen, xenon, LED and laser), another aspect as we said above not unimportant. Just as you can not install xenon lights in a conventional headlamp approved for halogen light, you can not place LED lights if your vehicle is not approved for it.
Also, there are different types of bulbs for the car, and they are not interchangeable, because their sockets are different and their connections too. It is important that we know what type of lamp our car is mounted on (it is specified in the user manual), H1, H3, H4, R2, H7 …
Carry the incorrect or melted lights when passing the technical inspection of vehicles, in some cases, it can be considered as a serious defect (for example, having one of the crossings blown) so we will not pass the ITV in the first inspection.
All these considerations will be taken into account in any vehicle repair establishment. For this reason, it is more than advisable that you go to a trustworthy workshop to carry out the replacement of the lamps in your vehicle. In addition, in some cases, this operation is not simple (even in some car model it may involve the dismantling of some piece of the bodywork) so putting yourself in the hands of professionals will be your best choice.
