How to Use a Hair Straightener

Hair straightening is a process to straighten wavy or curly hairs. Hairs are built from keratin which is a strong fibrous protein. The structure of this protein is made from the chemical bonding of disulphide and hydrogen. Disulphide gives the hair elasticity while hydrogen bonding is the reason for your hair being curly or wavy. When this hydrogen bonding can be removed your wavy or curly hair will become straight. That can be done by applying heat to it. This work is done by a machine that is called the hair straightener.

In 1872 a french hair stylist named Marcel Grateau started using hot flat iron rods while applying some chemical lotions on the hair before using the iron rods. But it did not work well as it burned hairs and the scalps as well causing, permanent damage to the hair. Later in 1906, Simon E. Monroe introduced a heated hair comb that has to be heated in before using it and then comb hair like normal combs. This was also used to straighten hairs. For straight hair this process was very time-consuming, and like before, it burnt the hair by damaging it permanently.

The main theme of modern hair straighteners came from Isaac Shero in 1909. His hair straightening machine was two hot metal plates that would glide through the hairs. This was better than the previous designs as it lowered the hair damage. He also used ceramic in the straightener and also introduced electrical straighteners.

In 1912 Jennifer Bell Schofield from Scotland introduced an improved version of hair straightener which, had hinged metal plates connected to a long tong type equipment. But this was ok till people became interested in curly hair. This curly fashion remained till 1980. In 1980 straightening of hair once again became popular, and many companies started producing and selling hair straighteners with plastic handles. This trend remained till 2008 when iron was removed where gold and titanium were used. Ceramic also became popular. These materials were good enough to distribute heat evenly without causing lesser or almost no damage to your hair. This article will focus on how to use a hair straightener.

Choosing the right straightener:

Before we start how to use a hair straightener, we need to know how to choose the right one. Depending on your hair you should buy a hair straightener or what kind of style you want to do to your hair. Also, the built materials differ from one type to another. There are lots of hair straighteners available in the market. Here we will mention some of the common and mostly, used hair straighteners.

  • Ceramic hair straightener:¬†These types of straighteners have ceramic plates or ceramic coatings on the plates. Ceramic straighteners are good for curly hair. These are capable of providing even heat distribution. Ceramic hair straighteners are the best straighteners among all other available straighteners in the market.
  • Ionic hair straightener: These hair straighteners use ionic technology to trap the moisture of the hair while straightening it while giving the hair a silky and sleek look. An ionic hair straightener can be used on any type of hair.
  • Tourmaline hair straightener: These hair straightener plates are covered with tourmaline. They can produce negative ions which in terms takes less heat to do its job. These types are good for fine hair or brittle hair.
  • Titanium hair straightener: These hair straighteners offer titanium-coated plates. These are more capable of creating negative ions and get heat up very quickly than tourmaline hair straighteners. These are good for all types of hair. These hair straighteners are very expensive.
  • Wet hair to dry hair straightener: These straighteners use a venting technology that does not require drying your wet hair. These are good for curly or wavy hairs.

Steps to before using a hair straightener:

  • Cleaning hair: Use shampoo to clean your hair before using a hair straightener. Then you can use a conditioner on your hair.
  • Drying Hair: After cleaning your hair use a hairdryer to roughly dry your hair.
  • Brush: After drying your hair use a straightening brush to comb your hair. Try to avoid plastic brushes because that can cause statics.
  • Heat protecting lotion: Apply thermal protecting lotion on your hair. It is best to use while your hair is still moist. These protectants can save your hair from overheat and react against humidity.

Hair straightener using procedure:

  • First, plug in the hair straightener and turn the on button. Look for ON indicating LED.
  • Divide your hair into several sections with clips for easily straightening them. It straightens every section separately.
  • Set the temperature that best suits your hair. Over-temperature can burn or even permanently do hair damage to your hair. So be careful while selecting the temperature. Rough hair needs more heat but in case of fine or brittle hair do not cross 410 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Try to place the device closer to your scalp at least one inch closer. For thicker hair get more close. But not too close that can burn your scalp.
  • Take time for each section and apply the straightener to each section slowly.
  • Try not to apply too much pressure on the hair and do not place it in one place for a long time. This can damage your hair and can make them awkwardly raised.
  • Glide the straightener thoroughly through the full length of your hair.
  • You may have to straighten the same length several times depending on the thickness and texture of your hair. Fine and thinner hair can be done in one slide but for thick hair, it takes more time. Also, if the temperature is low, it will take some time than normal.
  • After finishing each section of hair, remove the clip from that section.
  • After the straightening process is finished, set your blow dryer in low-temperature mode and apply it to the hair. Then apply some hair spray so the straightening effect can last the whole day.
